Saving a Failing Reef Aquarium

It’s always nice for our team to install new aquariums, but it’s equally as satisfying to be given the chance to save a failing reef aquarium.

The Brief

We were contacted by a residential client in Cheshire who had expressed concern that there custom reef aquarium, currently being maintained by another party, was not performing as well as it should. The tank was suffering from nuisance algae growth and corals were dying.

Our Findings

Upon our first visit to view the tank and perform a survey, we found a number of faults with the set up of the aquarium, its water parameters and general cleanliness. The tank was in rather poor condition.

Examining the sump filter tank housed below below the aquarium revealed much of the same. There was again excessive detritus waste and a lack of maintenance. The phosphate filter which is designed to reduce algae growth was completely clogged. The protein skimmer which reduces tank nutrients was not functioning at all and very grubby.

To add to the growing list of issues, the aquarium water was at 30 degrees which is dangerous to livestock health and had already caused coral bleaching. Upon testing the waters salinity, we found  it to be far too low.

Desperate action was required to save this tank and so we advised it would need 2 of our technicians a full day to remedy the problems.

Our Actions to Save this Reef Aquarium

We first started by completely cleaning the aquarium panes to remove all algae. With the system turned off this algae would drop to the bottom of the tank. Here it can be siphoned out and we also clean the sand bed and perform a 300 litre water change!

Allowing the algae to settle helps to siphon it out

Next the sump tank is stripped down with all components being removed for a deep clean. The reverse osmosis filter which supplies fresh water to the aquarium requires its filters changing about every 6 months. We change these filters as a matter of course.

This large wall reef aquarium relied on a thermostatic heater to maintain its water temperature. This type of heater is fine for a smaller aquarium provided its changed every 12-18 months. However due to the size and sheer value of this tank a dedicated temperature controller is far more suitable. This controller not only controls our newly installed titanium heater but also a set of cooling fans.

Job finished!

We are continuing to provide our fish tank maintenance service for this reef twice per month. As time progresses and the tank is serviced it will once again become a fabulous, healthy live coral aquarium.

Our Fish Tank Cleaning Service

Marine Fish Tank Cleaning Service in Glossop

Performing our fish tank cleaning service in glossop, Derbyshire. We were contacted by this client to provide our fish tank cleaning service on a regular basis and maintain their 700 litre reef tank.

Our client had become increasingly busy with work commitments and so lacked the time to maintain the aquarium. However, they did not want to decommission the tank and so our services were the ideal solution.

Our first maintenance visit was to clean the tank and perform water tests. The test results showed that both phosphate and nitrate levels were higher than normal.

Because of this, our next service involved a clean of the tank, filter clean and a 300 litre water change.
The water change would help to improve water parameters.

We are now providing our aquarium cleaning service twice per month until water parameters have improved. Upon which, we will then visit once per month to maintain its health.

Twin Aquarium Installation in Altrincham, Cheshire.

We are a Cheshire fish tank installer and we’re pleased to be commissioned to replace this restaurants two aquariums with brand new custom fish tanks.

Cheshire Fish Tank Installer

The aquarium install started with the removal of one of the old tanks. The fish were temporarily housed in our dedicated storage tank which monitors water temperate and oxygenates the water. With the fish happy we could then entirely remove the old fish tank set up.
The area was then cleaned in preparation for the new custom fish tank to be installed. The new tanks were built off-site in our dedicated workshop. They were to sit over a step and so precise measurements were taken prior, to ensure a good fit.
After fitting the first new aquarium we added its decoration and filled it with a mix of matured and fresh water. Once this water was at correct PH and temperature the fish were added to their new home. To ensure the tank did not suffer from ‘new tank syndrome’ we used some of the old mature filter media from the old tank within the filter of the new one.

Setting up a New Aquarium?

New tank syndrome as its name suggests is a condition which mainly affects new fish tanks. It occurs when there is insufficient bacteria present to cope with the amount of fish stock in the aquarium. The bacteria needed to breakdown all the wastes produced by fish take several weeks to colonise a new aquarium. If fish are added before the bacteria are present in sufficient numbers, then the levels of ammonia and nitrite will rise. When this happens the tank is said to be suffering from new tank syndrome. This can lead to fish stress or even death.
There are several brands of bacterial supplements readily available which are great for helping the fish tanks filter colonise with the bacterias required for filtration.
To install the second custom tank the same process was followed. Both tanks are lit by automated LED lighting which gives a realistic looking display.
We had great feedback from our client who also opted to further employ us to provide our on-going aquarium maintenance service in Cheshire. The tanks are monitored weekly for the next 4 weeks, after which, cleaning the aquariums commences once per month via an aquarium maintenance contract.
As part of our fish tank cleaning service we provide services such as;
• Aquarium cleaning
• Water change
• Filter clean
• Gravel clean and decoration replacement
