Office In Wall Reef Aquarium

UPDATE of our 3rd floor office in wall reef aquarium build.

This project began with hoisting the tanks glass panels and metal support frame up to the top floor of our clients offices, currently undergoing refurbishment. This bespoke aquarium would be located between the 2 directors offices giving both a great view. As well as one side facing into the office lobby area providing a view straight down the tank.

The Tank Build

Once the panels and supporting steel frame were safely deposited, the next step is to position the frame (which was welded to the floor!) and build the aquarium. Our team performed this aquarium on-site build over a 2 day period and did a great job.

We built this aquarium onsite

A larger tank was first proposed by the client, however it was eventually approved by the structural surveyor that a long x deep x high tank, complete with sump filter would be feasible and the floor was up to the job of holding this heavy load. A series of RSJ’s were put in place to add further strength before we commenced with the tank build.

Bespoke Reef Filter System

With the display tank and sump tanks now in position, we started installing the necessary high end filtration system that would be filter and support the tanks livestock. Before starting any project, we produce a custom aquarium design and filter system. Various calculations need to be performed such as, display and sump tank flow rates, organic load, water displacement etc.

The custom filtration system comprises of some of the very latest equipment to come on the market. It incorporates an automatic top up and water change system, trace element dosing unit and an algae reduction light reactor. This algal reactor reduces organics by growing macro algae, and thus effectively utilising nutrients that might be used by a unsightly nuisance algae. It’s the very same principle that a good pond design utilises – growing plants around and within the pond use up nutrients to keep water clean and healthy.

Fish tank filter design

Another aspect of this bespoke aquarium is the use of closed loop pumps to provide the main wave like flow within the tank. These Vectra pumps and plumbed directly to the underside of the aquarium and suck water in from here. The water then enters the pumps and is discharged back to the tank near the top corners. These pumps have a variable flow option which means they will run at 30% power for 20 seconds and then 100% power for 20 seconds. An added bonus is they are App controlled and so work together to pulse flow alternately. This creates excellent turbulent water flow that marine fish and corals thrive on. In the evening the pumps enter a night time mode and only provide a gentle flow to allow livestock to relax.

Additionally, together with the automation already in place, we added an automated cleaning system to the filters large protein skimmer. A protein skimmer removes organics from the water which results in the collection of a dark liquid in the skimmers collection cup. A skimmer is at its most efficient when kept clean. Therefore, the auto cleaning unit is programmed to remove and flush away organic deposits once  per day. Without this unit, the skimmer may be left for days without being manually cleaned which results in a drop in its effectiveness.

Reef Tank Aquascape and Stocking

We decided to keep this Aquascape simple as the tank is only 50cm deep but also taking into acccount the view both company directors willh have when sat in their offices. A combination of Real Reef rock and live coral sand is used to create the foundation which we would be adding live coral too.

Aquarium installer

Once a stable foundation is built and the tank has bedded in for a couple of weeks we are able to start adding the first pieces of livestock.

Various soft and hard corals are placed into the structure and cemented in place. At this point, we program the lighting which is the very latest generation LED lamp from D&D The Aquarium Solution. We have installed 6 x Hydra52hd lamps above this tank which will provide more than enough light for both soft and hard corals.

Aquarium led lighting
Latest spec Hydra52 light

Programming is a quick and easy as the lamps link directly to a phone or tablet via an App. Due to the tank being immature, lighting is kept at a low level so as to avoid unnecessary algal blooms which often plague new aquarium set ups.

We will be continuing to stock this office in wall reef aquarium up to Christmas and into the new year. Please keep an eye on our blog for further updates.

What Products Do I Need for An Aquarium?

How To Create A Successful Aquarium

Setting up an aquarium for the first time can be a daunting task. Research is key to deciding which aquarium products are necessary for the health of the fish. Other considerations to take into account are the type of fish you intend to keep, how much space is required, and last but not least, your budget. Follow our suggestions below to create your first aquarium.

Choosing Your Aquarium

The aquarium itself is the most significant purchase, and you should try and buy the largest you can afford to allow more surface area and swimming space. The size of your room is always a consideration, but smaller aquariums can be found, holding as little as seven litres of water. A stand is essential, particularly if you have a glass tank as they are much more substantial than acrylic models. You may need to buy the hood separately. It should cover the aquarium tightly to prevent the fish from escaping, and it will help to reduce evaporation.

The Essential Kit

Other essential aquarium products include lighting, filtration and heat, all necessary to protect the health of your fish. The light may be included with the lid or may be purchased separately. There are different options including fluorescent, halogen and incandescent. As a beginner, the most straightforward choice is to use fluorescent bulbs as they are cooler and cheaper to run. The filtration system is essential, and the filter must be the appropriate size for the tank. The system should ideally have a flow rate that allows it to filter the water four times per hour. A heater will be necessary to maintain a temperature of approximately 77°F. A submersible model will have a numerical setting that is easy to read.

Extras To Consider

The rest of the kit you will need is the smaller items but will keep your fish healthier and happier. Thermometers are relatively inexpensive. Substrate is the material used on the bottom of the aquarium and helps the filtration process and has a positive effect on the water chemistry. You will also need a good quality, medium sized net for catching the fish.

Leave It To The Professionals

If all this seems a bit too much, why not leave it to the experts? We can arrange professional fish tank installation and an ongoing maintenance service. Please contact us for more details.

Royal Derby Hospital Aquariums

We offer our aquarium services in the whole of derbyshire, and so it was nice to be contacted by the Royal Derbyshire Hospital. They explained that they were unhappy with their current contractor who was not adequately servicing a large wall aquarium of theirs.

Our Findings:

A visit by our company was promptly arranged to go a view the tank to see where improvements could be made. Upon visiting, the tank was in poor condition and improvements could be made everywhere!!

The hospital also explained that they’d like one of our rental aquariums for a patient day room where minor treatments take place.

Because of contractual reasons we were not able to start our work for a few months but once November came we were given the green light to proceed.

Aquarium Rental

Our first task was to install the new fish tank rental. The hospital had already chosen the size and colour of the tank. We had previously worked on this tank so installation and disruption to the hospital was kept to a minimum. From start to finish we installed this aquarium rental in under an hour.

Aquarium – Major Service

Next was to tackle the 8ft wall aquarium. Again previously, we had produced a checklist of works for this tank to make the cleaning process as efficient as possible. Even so, this deep clean would take us over 5 hours!

We started by removing all the tanks decoration as it was covered in algae and looked like it hadn’t been changed…… ever.

Fish tank maintenance
Filthy tank decoration

Once the tank was clear we could hoover the entire gravel bed and clean the tank panels. Additionally,  the external filter was removed and cleaned.

Tank emptied and ready to hoover.

We were now in a good position to install some new equipment and decorate the aquarium.

New equipment consisted of:

* Titanium heater and temperature controller.

* White and blue led lighting.

* Twin air pump

And so, 5 hours later the tank is finished. We immediately noticed a difference in the fish. They were far more active which was a result of increased tank water flow and a 100 litre water change.

Job finished, tank looking great.

Our Acrylic Aquariums go to Kuwait

Two acrylic aquariums ready to be shipped to the Cultural Center in Kuwait City.

Our aquariums will form part of a replica display of an experiment carried out on the International Space Station. For this project, the acrylic tanks were over-engineered as they would be for use in a public environment. We also supplied filtration systems and lighting for the tanks.

Acrylic is an ideal material to build large and/or public environment aquariums from. It’s stronger than glass which makes it very safe. However, it is more expensive than glass and so glass is still the preferred choice for home aquariums.

Custom Fish Tank Build in Manchester

As part of this complete home refurbishment we were delighted to be asked to install a bespoke in wall aquarium. This custom fish tank build in Manchester was commissioned by our client to be a tropical live planted tank. Our client had some previous experience with this type of aquarium. Because they were now refurbing their home it was a great opportunity to install a larger bespoke aquarium.

The Aquarium Build

This aquarium measures long x deep x high. The tank is manufactured in 15mm thick bevelled edge glass. It has ultra clear panes on its 3 viewable sides, and a bit more unusual, an external weir box on the wall side. An external weir box is hidden from view and allows water flow from the tank to the sump filtration system.

We use one of our extremely strong metal frame supports for this tank. It allows for complete support of the aquarium whilst allowing a large space below the aquarium for the filtration system.

Aquarium Delivery

Next we have the enviable task of getting our bespoke fish tank to the rear of the property. The tank was too large to fit through the front door and so we utilised patio doors at the rear. The scariest moment was squeezing the tank down the side of the house, contending with an uneven path and a gate at the end. Our guys have loads of experience in moving large tanks, we also have several lifting tables which are invaluable. Something to consider if you want your own bespoke aquarium is whether it fits into your home or business? We also build on-site fish tanks if they are particularly large.

With the tank now in position and fitting the gap with a few millimetres to spare, we can relax 🙂

Aquarium Theme

The theme for this wall aquarium is freshwater tropical. It will eventually contain a variety of tropical fish and live plants. We have installed intense LED lighting over the tank to promote vigorous plant growth. To encourage plant growth even further, we have incorporated into this aquarium design an automatic fertiliser dosing system and Co2 gas injection. Both these systems are completely automated. The entire fish tank set up will be maintained by our technician during a monthly service visit.

Saving a Failing Reef Aquarium

It’s always nice for our team to install new aquariums, but it’s equally as satisfying to be given the chance to save a failing reef aquarium.

The Brief

We were contacted by a residential client in Cheshire who had expressed concern that there custom reef aquarium, currently being maintained by another party, was not performing as well as it should. The tank was suffering from nuisance algae growth and corals were dying.

Our Findings

Upon our first visit to view the tank and perform a survey, we found a number of faults with the set up of the aquarium, its water parameters and general cleanliness. The tank was in rather poor condition.

Examining the sump filter tank housed below below the aquarium revealed much of the same. There was again excessive detritus waste and a lack of maintenance. The phosphate filter which is designed to reduce algae growth was completely clogged. The protein skimmer which reduces tank nutrients was not functioning at all and very grubby.

To add to the growing list of issues, the aquarium water was at 30 degrees which is dangerous to livestock health and had already caused coral bleaching. Upon testing the waters salinity, we found  it to be far too low.

Desperate action was required to save this tank and so we advised it would need 2 of our technicians a full day to remedy the problems.

Our Actions to Save this Reef Aquarium

We first started by completely cleaning the aquarium panes to remove all algae. With the system turned off this algae would drop to the bottom of the tank. Here it can be siphoned out and we also clean the sand bed and perform a 300 litre water change!

Allowing the algae to settle helps to siphon it out

Next the sump tank is stripped down with all components being removed for a deep clean. The reverse osmosis filter which supplies fresh water to the aquarium requires its filters changing about every 6 months. We change these filters as a matter of course.

Reef aquarium refurbishment
Sump tank is stripped down

This large wall reef aquarium relied on a thermostatic heater to maintain its water temperature. This type of heater is fine for a smaller aquarium provided its changed every 12-18 months. However due to the size and sheer value of this tank a dedicated temperature controller is far more suitable. This controller not only controls our newly installed titanium heater but also a set of cooling fans.

Reef aquarium
Job finished!

We are continuing to provide our fish tank maintenance service for this reef twice per month. As time progresses and the tank is serviced it will once again become a fabulous, healthy live coral aquarium.

Please keep an eye on our blogs for future updates.

Custom Aquarium Build in Leeds

A recently completed large custom aquarium build in Leeds for a residential client. The brief here was to fill an existing alcove with an in wall aquarium as part of a full house refurbishment.

Custom Aquarium Build

This bespoke fish tank is 2 metres long x 45cm deep x 75cm high. The tank is manufactured from 12mm thick bevelled edge glass. Our custom aquarium design incorporates external filtration which is linked directly into the base of the aquarium. This ensures the tank has a very clean look with absolutely no equipment on show in the tank.

The filtration system incorporates UV sterilisers to eliminate fish disease and improve water clarity. External heaters linked to a temperature controller ensure precise temperature control to within 0.1 degree.

The aquarium sits on one of our custom steel frames. Our frames are fully welded, powder coated and have adjustable feet to ensure they are perfectly level.

Aquarium Theme

It was decided at the beginning of the project that the aquarium should be low maintenance and easy to look after. We will be soon adding a range of tropical fish to this tank. Aquarium decor consists of black sand, rock and artificial plants.

White and blue automated LED lighting compliments the tanks decoration nicely. Lighting is programmed so that the blue lights turn on first in the morning and go off last in the evening. White lighting turns on during the day.

Fish Tank Cleaning Service

As part of our aquarium installation, our client has chosen to employ our fish tank cleaning service. Our technician will visit every 2 months to perform all aspects of cleaning and aquatic husbandry. Also during the visit we can supply new livestock, fish food give advice if required.
